How to be an Effective Leader Manager

All effective leader-managers share certain characteristics

It is these characteristics that allow them to qualify as an effective leader manager.

In order to improve your abilities as a better leader and manager, we suggest that you should focus on developing six specific characteristics:

1.  Create and communicate clear goal focus.
2.  Learn to communicate with more accuracy and clarity.
3.  Manage time: Plan ahead, prioritise, delegate and make accurate decisions.
4.  Learn to handle difficult conflict situations calmly, quickly and professionally.
5.  Develop more self-control, self-confidence and become a self-motivator.
6.  Use your language to inspire others and create a more positive and productive work atmosphere.

Let us look at each of these characteristics, in turn:

1. Clarity of goals
Clear goals means: The ability to know where the team needs to be:

• Three months.
• Six months from now.
• A year from now.

Clarity means: Having a VISION for the future.

What would happen to the leader-managers who had no idea what they wanted the team to achieve in the future? If they could offer no sense of direction.

How would you score yourself, out of ten, for the possession of a CLEAR goal focus?

2. Clear communication
Clear communication means the ability to explain ideas and plans, such that other people UNDERSTAND you. They do not necessarily have to agree, at first, but at least you must make yourself UNDERSTOOD.

What would happen to the person who could NOT make themselves understood. What if he / she says to himself “I know what I mean, but I can’t explain it”?

How would you score yourself, out of ten, for the ability to explain yourself and make yourself UNDERSTOOD?

3. Rational planner
The leader manager must be able to plan ahead: the leader must be able to act NOW to avoid problems NEXT year.

That means: Time management, Prioritising, Delegating and making decisions. The leader must be a good time manager; as opposed to those who do NOT management their time, and do not plan ahead. Many people put off making decisions and do not prioritise well. They are always “on the back foot”, in reaction to events.

How would you score yourself, out of ten, for the ability to manage time and organise practical plans that are likely to work.

4. Rational conflict
The manager must be the kind of person who can resolve interpersonal conflict quickly, calmly and according to named principles.

In addition, the leader should know when it is right to compromise; and when not to. The opposite would be the person who becomes too emotional during a conflict situation, and makes a bad situation worse by saying too much, or saying the wrong thing, or avoiding the whole issue and just hoping that it will go away, on its own.

How would you score yourself, out of ten, for the ability to handle conflict, calmly, rationally and quickly?
You do it in such a way that reduces bad feelings?

5. Positive emotion: Inspire self
The ability to self-motivate and create self-confidence, especially during tough times, is a crucial skill. The contrary to that skill are all the people who CANNOT self-motivate and thus they become quickly disheartened and too easily feel defeated. They become too easily depressed, cynical. To feel strong they need everything to be going their way.

How would you score yourself, out of ten, for the ability to “manage your own mind” and choose your own emotions, so that you are able to ride the storms, and feel strong within yourself, in spite of the bad things that do happen?

Positive emotion: Inspire others
If you have mastered the previous five skills, you can now do the last one: Inspire others.
Your goal must be to create a positive, productive atmosphere, irrespective of the present difficulties.
The contrary to that skill are all the people who unnerve, deflate and unsettle their colleagues by their unrelenting pessimism, lack of hope and negative language.
Do you know anyone who has a negative effect on the emotions of others around?

How would you score yourself out of ten for the ability to purposefully inspire others around you, who may be feeling down, or defeated, and replace that feeing with a clear goal, a detailed written plan and a wonderful feeling of optimism and strength?”

If you have scored yourself lower than a 6 on any of the above attributes, you may want to attend the two day effective leader manager course, listed above.

Thank you.
