How to be an Effective Leader Manager

Posted by Chris on 11/11/2008

Two day management development programme

All effective leader-managers share certain characteristics. In order to improve your abilities as a better leader and manager, we suggest that you should focus on developing six specific characteristics.

1.      Create and communicate clear goal focus
2.
Learn to communicate with more accuracy and clarity
3.
Manage time: Plan ahead, prioritise, delegate and make accurate decisions
4.
Learn to handle difficult conflict situations calmly, quickly and professionally
5.
Develop more self control, self confidence and become a self- motivator
6.      Use your language to inspire others and create a more positive and productive work atmosphere

ClarityClear goalsThe ability to know where the team needs to be
·
Three months
·
Six months from now
Having a VISION for the future
What would happen to the person who did NOT  know exactly what he/she wanted the team to achieve; If he / she could offer no sense of directionHow would you score yourself, out of ten, for CLEAR goal focus?
ClarityClear communicationThe ability to explain ideas and plans such that other people UNDERSTAND. They do not necessarily have to agree at first, but you must make yourself UNDERSTOOD.What would happen to the person who could NOT make themselves understood,He / she says to himself “I know what I mean but I can’t explain it”?How would you score yourself, out of ten, for  the ability to explain yourself and make yourself UNDERSTOOD?
RationalityRational planner The leader manager must be able to plan ahead:
Must be able to act NOW to avoid problems NEXT year.
That means:
Time management
Prioritising Delegating and making decisions.
As opposed to those who do NOT management their time and do not plan ahead. They put off making decisions and do not prioritise well. They are always on the back foot, in reaction to events. How would you score yourself out of ten for  the ability to manage time and organise practical plans that are likely to work.
RationalityRational conflictThe person who can resolve interpersonal conflict quickly calmly and according to named principles, and who knows when it is right to compromise and when not to.As opposed to the person who becomes emotional during a conflict situation and makes a bad situation worse by: saying too much, or saying the wrong thing oravoiding the issue and hoping that it will go away on its own. How would you score yourself, out of ten, for  The ability to handle conflict, calmly, rationally and quickly? You do it in such a way that reduces bad feelings.
Positive emotionInspire selfThe ability to self motivate and create confidence in oneself especially during tough times. As opposed to the people who CANNOT self motivate and becomes disheartened and feels defeated. They become depressed, cynical, and need everything to be going their way.How would you score yourself, out of ten, for  the ability to manage your own mind and emotions so that you are able to ride the storms and feel strong within yourself: in spite of the bad things that happen.
Positive emotionInspire othersIf you have done the other five, you can now do the last one: Inspire others and create a positive productive atmosphere, irrespective of the present difficulties. As opposed to those people who unnerve, deflate and unsettle their colleagues by their unrelenting pessimism, lack of hope and negative languageHow would you score yourself out of ten for  The ability to inspire others around you who may be feeling down or defeated, and replace that feeing with a goal, a plan and a feeling of optimism and strength?
