Management training: How to develop trust

Posted by Chris on 20/11/2009

Trust is a vital element in the relationships within a team.
Trust is an emotion.
You trust other people to the degree that you believe they will do all that they say they will do.

And
You trust other people to the degree you believe they will NOT do what they promise they won’t do.

Trust is a highly regarded quality
We want to be trusted and we want to be able to trust the others. A lack of trust in a team  is a recipe for disaster.  Without trust, all chance of success will be obliterated.

How can we develop this vital element in our character?
Here are three steps to take:
1. Be trust worthy
2. Remember the one breach rule
3. Trust others

Let us look at each one:

ONE:  Be trustworthy!

You trust another people to the degree that you believe they will do all that they say they will do.

From that definition of trust we can derive good advice.

Keep your promises.

1. Do all that you promise you will do.
2. Do not neglect to fulfil your commitments.

• If you say you will call her, then call her

• If you say you will not tell anyone- don't tell anyone!

TWO: Remember the ONE BREACH RULE

The “one breach rule” states that “It only takes ONE BREACH of trust to destroy all trust.

You may be good to a person for ten years, and then betray them only ONCE on ONE important thing, and BANG: the all the trust is gone.

The ONE BREACH RULE: It only takes one act of betrayal to destroy all trust.

It only takes one example of dishonesty to pollute trust irrevocably.

If you are thinking of doing it wrong "just once" then remember that ONE breach of trust is enough to destroy all trust, forever!

THREE: Be prepared to trust others

Many people do not trust others.
There is a valid reason for their innate mistrust. The reason is, they have been let down many times in the past. These let-downs form the basis of a general mistrust of all people. This general mistrust is an understandable error.

Do not let the fact that SOME have let you down in the past, unduly prejudice your judgement about ALL people.
If you do, you will become a grumpy cynic.

Do not become too cynical as you age.

Instead, follow this rule:
Unless you have definite and specific reason to doubt this individual, be prepared to show trust.

As you sow, so you reap.
As you trust others, so you will gain their trust, in return.

Summary
Trust is a vital element in the relationships within a team.
You trust other people to the degree you believe they will do all that they say they will do.
Without trust, all chance of success will be obliterated.

How can we develop this vital element in our character?
Here are three steps to take
1. Be trust worthy- i.e. if you say you will call, then call.
2. Remember the one breach rule- i.e. it only takes ONE BREACH of trust, to destroy all trust.
3. Trust others- i.e. unless you have reason to doubt this person, be prepared to show trust.
