How to manage stress
We live in a world that creates pressure to achieve more with less. That constant pressure can have an effect on some people from time to time. They may feel it as stress, tiredness or a drop in motivation. It may even create absenteeism.
So, “How to handle pressure at work” is an important skill that means mastering the following skills:
Creating and sustaining a positive attitude Because the best way to handle pressure is manage your own mind. Stress is sometimes caused by the negative use of the imagination.
How to create a positive mental attitude Keep your mind focused on what you can do about the current situation, NOT how the current situation happened.
Accurate and strong self image Because a strong self image makes people more resilient and able to resist the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune.
How to develop a strong self image See yourself as you want to be, not as you were in the past when you were younger and with less experience. Tell yourself, “Now I am older, I can do better than ever”.
Planning skills Because prioritising and intelligent working methods can minimise the pressure of fire-fighting. Failure to plan causes chaos and chaos is stressful.
How to improve your planning skills Every day, start by taking a sheet of paper and work out how you should spend the day, if you were going to get the SIX MOST VALUABLE things done. Spend your time on the six most valuable things.
Stress management method Because knowing how to orchestrate the three elements of stress, (intensity, duration and frequency) will help you stay strong. Recognise that stress is good, because it stimulates an adaptive response. BUT stress must be measured. And it must be balanced with rest and recuperation.
Too much stress is bad Not enough stress is also bad (boring and unproductive) Find your optimum stress level where you are pressured to improve, but do not feel overwhelmed.
Assertiveness Because some people keep saying “yes” and end up feeling overwhelmed.
How to be more assertive Learn to say this: “YES, I will do this for you, BUT ONLY IF YOU DO THIS FOR ME......” and then you name your reward. In other words, learn to develop trading relationships where both parties give and take in equal measure.
