Volcanic cloud chaos - Crisis management
What do you do when it all goes wrong?
The volcanic eruption that grounded aircraft has caused many businesses and individuals a crisis situation.
What should you do in a crisis situation?
Here are the steps:
Step one Guard against emotional and intellectual overwhelm.
The collapse of the original plan will throw some into an emotional collapse and into a mental fog.
Don't let this happen to you
Absorb and process the fact that your original plans are not going to happen. Accept that as quickly as possible and then turn to step two.
Step two Open your eyes and ears, and gather as much reliable information of the new situation as you can.
You need to know the parameters of the problem.
This is done by noting and recording in writing as much reliable information as possible.
Do not accept other people’s non-informed opinion as “information”.
Speculation is not information.
When you have sufficient information (which is an ongoing process) add step three, the following step
Step three Set a new goal
Given the new situation is the new context; you must quickly decide what is the best you can reasonably expect to achieve.
Make this the basis for your actions in step four
Step four Make a written plan Take a pad of paper or a computer and start making written plans of action based on the information you gathered in step two.
What are you going to do?
When?
How?
With whom?
Then take step five
Step five Swing into action!
The crisis situation will require a response from you!
That response should be:
* Logical = see step one * Informed by the facts = see step two * Goal directed = see step three * Well organized = see step four * Quick = see step five (this step)
Finally You can’t control much in this world.
The good news is, you don’t need to.
But, especially in a crisis situation, you must control yourself.
