Assertiveness Training
To be professional there are times when each of us needs to behave assertively.
The problem for some is; they do not know how.
Their feelings get the better of them and they later regret the way they acted.
So this assertiveness training course is designed to help in three ways
- Give a theory to define what assertiveness actually is (and what it is not).
- Give three specific methods showing exactly what to say and what to do. You pick the method depending on the context.
- Give delegates the opportunity to practice with the help of a trainer who gives support and feedback.
Assertiveness Training Theory
Four methods of influence
- Aggressive (based upon an appeal to fear) A false method.
- Passive (based upon a desire to be liked and not disagree with anyone) A false method.
- Manipulative (based upon “playing games” with people) A false method.
- Assertive (a commitment to rational methods of communication and conflict resolution). The recommended approach.
Why people use the wrong methods
The false methods work in the short term but fail medium to long term.
For example: Aggressive shouting can work in the short term but will eventually cause the relationship to fail.
Using a principled method is sometimes difficult in the short term but pays off in the medium to long term.
Practice: Three Assertiveness Methods

Method two “Implication Questions Technique”

Method three “Six-step method”
A step by step method for handling an upset person who is coming at you, (as opposed to you going to them).
