Coaching can be defined as:
A form of directive teaching based upon communicating clear outcomes, inspiring thoughtful action, giving accurate feedback and stimulating positive change.
Mentoring can be defined as:
A form of non directive teaching based on role modelling "success principles", asking intelligent questions and guiding another towards more productive work methods.
Coaching Method
Based on a five step formula:
- Agree a clear outcome
- Formulate an intelligent plan
- Take action on the plan
- Gather the feedback (on and off target)
- Change in the light of off target feedback
Two key coaching skills
- Clear communication
- Specific and objective: Not vague or subjective.
Ability to give critical feedback in a way that inspires change
How to give negative feedback in a positive way.

Mentoring
Develop a strong belief in Continuous improvement
Continuous improvement: it comes in two forms:
- Evolutionary, Baby-steps improvement.
- Revolutionary, Explosive improvement.
Mentoring Key Skills
Personal Consistency
As a Mentor, you have to be consistent.
Develop your personal style
Be your “best-self”.
Asking questions rather than giving commands
A mentor asks questions that stimulate answers, (as opposed to giving answers ready made).
Build the self image of others
People act in accordance with their self-image.
Build their self-image and you will build their performance.
