Coaching Mentoring Skills

Leadership and management training open courses in Manchester, Birmingham, Gloucester, Milton Keynes, Swindon, Oxford, London, Nottingham, West Midlands, Edinburgh – Scotland

Coaching and mentoring is purposeful one to one communication between the coach and the delegate

The purpose and reason of coaching
The purpose of coaching is to empower the delegate to be more effective by addressing their individual needs

The reason coaching is often right for the business is that individual performance issues that could never be addressed in an open forum can be targeted with precision. It is therefore the best method of training.

The issues could include:

  • Clarity of purpose and goal focus
  • Confidence and self esteem
  • Personal motivation
  • Inspiring motivation
  • Handling difficult people
  • Developing the ability to say “no”
  • Developing the ability to say “yes”
  • Developing the inability to give constructive feedback in a way that does not sound like criticism
  • Prioritising
  • Negotiating the right terms
  • Handling pressure
Process

The process is

  • Identify the delegates
  • Gain agreement to engage in the process. (This is not a process that can be forced)
  • Identify the key issues by means of a questionnaire
  • Agree the right time
  • Initiate the programme
Method

The trainer should work with four delegates per training day in four two-hour sessions
The sessions will address the identified issues and the trainer will deliver the material relevant to each person and negotiate an objective plan to implement the solutions

The delegate has one session each month and the programme becomes a dynamic activity with the purpose of stimulating positive, predetermined measurable change in every individual

Personal coaching and mentoring summary and action plan

The training method follows this general pattern:

  1. The trainer gives a clear explanation of the point in question.
  2. The trainer then demonstrates the principle and gives specific examples.
  3. Then, the delegates practice by doing an exercise with each other.
  4. The delegates practice by doing exercise with the trainer.
  5. All points are supported with full written notes to take away.
  6. Delegates are asked to write down an associated action, for each point made.
  7. (At the end of the day, we have about twenty such actions, from which the delegates choose six which are the most personally meaningful).

Note: we do not believe in placing people in any situation of embarrassment by demanding that they 'perform' in front of the whole group. So you can relax: come on this course and be at ease; ready to learn new skills!
